It is dense with a lot of characters, but for me a fast read. Feels like he is finding his style with this one, more refined with a bit less showing off finding that hypnotic dream like feeling. Dr narrator becomes a double agent as he tries to be a patriot without Once again Modiano has recreated the atmosphere of Nazi occupied Paris in WWII. When one begins to understand what is happening after the midpoint of the book, the elements that seemed so disconnected and confusing begin to coalesce into a nightmare of what life in occupied Paris was like for this young man.
