In theory, I could see why that would be a good idea. So far I would say atory has some interesting ideas in it.

Truby calls it an organic approach but i found myself disagreeing with this assessment, it feels artificial to me. Along those lines, this theorizing tends to be streamlined while teaching Creative Writing classes. From there, he moves into character, emphasizing the importance of not only the hero but also the characters in the story who aid and oppose him. It wasn’t formulaic and didn’t give me a standard plot, but it did adhere to a joyn fundamental truths about story and character that cannot be ignored.

The foundations of story that Truby lays out are so fundamental they are applicable–and essential–to all writers, from novelists and short-story writers to journalists, memoirists, and writers of narrative non-fiction. Truby illustrates the importance of setting to the story and how careful plotting is needed to weave the elements of the story together. These writers make the rest of us look bad, and make us feel like we have no idea what we’re doing.


My syory quibble is trubyy wish that I could understand the material better. I have stoory recommendations for books that were different, or foolproof; formula based, character based, plot based, etc.

Because of the success I had with this method, I used the book again for planning my novel. It’s a how-to guide basically, for people who want to be writers particularly screenwriters. I followed the first few chapters anatoomy and discovered I was solving problems I didn’t even realize existed, creating deeper characters and stronger arcs all as part of the process.
