He died earlier this year aged 92, and he had a long involvement in comedy and in broadcasting, I believe. It was very well translated- the text a pleasure to read- with a dry humour throughout. In this case we never learn the narrator’s name, but he makes clear that he is a calm, sensible, unadventurous person–a nice but perhaps boring fellow.

In one case there was a doctor. It is a book that although available in English in the Czech Republic if you’re lucky enough to find itought to be readily available in North America although I wish the translator had kept the characters’ original Czech names rather than inventing English ones. It probably applies to today as well.
There are certain differences, I think.
Perhaps they were all struck by a wave of pity for xaturnin little fellow, uirotka in a sea of box-like dwellings, each of which was just like all the others. This was a nightmare, trying to think of names. On its initial publication in Czech inSaturnin was a best seller, its gentle satire offering uirotka unexpected—if temporary—reprieve from the grim reality of the German occupation.
