Suffice it to say, I loved all of these different threads and Robin McKinley’s skill at weaving them together into a complete story. He works nonstop, as if driven, for a fortnight until the painting is completed and shown to the queen. It’s wrenching, maddening, lyrical, unflinchingly honest in the way deerskun fairy tales, and it’s terribly sad.
Deerskin is a dark fantasy novel by Robin McKinleyfirst published mcklnley But it happens pretty early on, and the book ends up being more about recovery and healing. Like a Jane Yolen book is never bad. Might have made an adequate fairy tale at a twentieth of the bulk.
Only for McKinley completists. This, for me, was an incredibly challenging read – I had to keep putting the book down because it was so disturbing – but Robin McKinley does a phenomenal job of building this terror and claustrophobia, and then segueing the book from one of fear to one of hope.
