Suffice it to say, I loved all of these different threads and Robin McKinley’s skill at weaving them together into a complete story. He works nonstop, as if driven, for a fortnight until the painting is completed and shown to the queen. It’s wrenching, maddening, lyrical, unflinchingly honest in the way deerskun fairy tales, and it’s terribly sad.


Deerskin is a dark fantasy novel by Robin McKinleyfirst published mcklnley But it happens pretty early on, and the book ends up being more about recovery and healing. Only for McKinley completists. This, for me, was an incredibly challenging read – I had to keep putting the book down because it was so disturbing – but Robin McKinley does a phenomenal job of building this terror and claustrophobia, and then segueing the book from one of fear to one of hope.
