I’d recommend this book to people who could relate somewhat to the author, who need to know that they can recover from mental illness.
If my husband had access to the level of care that Jamison has enjoyed throughout her life, he’d probably be doing much better.
She has ridden the extreme mania highs and suffered the almost deadly depressions and tells her story with eloquence, humour and authority. See 1 question about An Unquiet Mind…. She glossed over her suicide attempt and the only description of hospitalization is that of one of her patients.

Her first wave of mania came in high school, but college was a struggle marked by violent moods and passions, and grad school pushed her over the edge.

She writes of the sensation of being “a zebra among the horses”, and the struggles of psychiatry to classify, research and treat. Normal people are not always boring. Some parts of it seem oddly written, almost silly, almost less like a professional novel and more like you’re listening to someone casually talk. This book is a fast easy read and you come out with a new appreciation of people in general. Then, too, are the bitter reminders … medicine to take, resent, forget, take, resent, and forget, but always to take.
Thank you for your feedback. Reedfield goes on and on, and finally there are only other’s recollections of your behavior … your bizarre, frantic, aimless behaviors … for mania has at least some grace in partially obliterating memories.

Because I honestly believe that as a result of it I have felt more things, more deeply; had more experiences, more intensely; loved more, and been more loved; laughed more often for having cried more often; appreciated more the springs, for all the winters; seen the finest and the more terrible in people, and slowly learned the values of caring, loyalty, and seeing things through.
During her first decade on lithium, the drug’s side effects blurred her vision so that she could concentrate only on journal articles or poetry. Then there’s couples therapy, because this disease puts a mighty strain on a marriage. This is an important, wonderful book.

When you’re high it’s tremendous. I really enjoyed this book.
